Description
La Colección de Invertebrados Marinos de la Estación Científica Charles Darwin (MCCDRS), fue instaurada con el propósito de proveer el soporte científico para estudios de biodiversidad nativa, endémica e introducida de la Reserva Marina de Galápagos (RMG). Actualmente, la colección custodia alrededor de 10.000 especímenes pertenecientes a los grupos de invertebrados marinos (Mollusca, Arthropoda, Cnidaria, Porifera, Equinodermata, Chordata, Annelida y Bryozoa), algas y peces.
La colección Marina es producto del aporte de investigación llevadas a cabo en la RMG desde los años 70s, que a lo largo del tiempo nos han permitido evidenciar la diversidad taxonómica y tener un referente geográfico de su distribución; esta colección se incrementa a través del constante aporte de las investigaciones, entre los proyectos más recientes que aportan al crecimiento de la MCCDRS son Especies Invasoras Marinas y Ecosistemas Marinos de Profundidad –Montañas Submarinas (MS) & Fuentes Hidrotermales (FH)-, de estos últimos se destaca la inclusión de 53 especies introducidas de la RMG y la posibilidad de albergar nuevas especies para la ciencia provenientes de los hábitats profundos ya que son entornos poco estudiados.
