Description
Data Records
The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 547 records.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

| Study Area Description | The El Pelado Marine Reserve (REMAPE) is part of Ecuador's national system of protected areas. It consists of a rocky reef with 13 underwater shoals with coral patches and the islet of El Pelado, two mangrove areas, and the coastal villages of Palmar, Ayangue, San Pedro, and Valdivia. |
| Design Description | Several sites around “Islote El Pelado” and others along the coast of the “REMAPE” reserve were used for the study. The sites were selected based on the following criteria: maximum depth of 16 m, rocky substrate, different exposures (windward vs. leeward) and ease of access. We found some coastal sites with rocky substrates, mostly near Ayangue. http://www.cenaim.espol.edu.ec/sites/cenaim.espol.edu.ec/files/manual%20biodiversidad.pdf |

Sampling Methods
Transects carried out during the day, through Diva Scuba. Based on in situ quantification of invertebrates, and due to the time required, video and photo transects were also carried out, with the aim of maximizing the information collected by diving. Individual video transects covering 20 m and photo transect series consisting of 20 images. More details on the methodology used can be found at http://www.cenaim.espol.edu.ec/sites/cenaim.espol.edu.ec/files/manual%20biodiversidad.pdf
| Study Extent | El Pelado Marine Reserve. Marine area consisting of a rocky reef and underwater shoals named: La Pared, Acuario, Bajo Tello, Laberinto, Rabo del Viejo, Zona Protegida, Bajo 40, La Reina, El Planchon, La Viejita, and San Ignacio, which have coral patches and the El Pelado islet, two mangrove areas, and the coastal towns of Palmar, Ayangue, San Pedro, and Valdivia. It extends approximately 5 km west from Punta Brava near Ayangue and covers 13,005 ha of marine habitats and 96 ha of terrestrial areas (Government of Ecuador 2016) (Area between -80.7326 and -80.8233 latitude and between -1.8993 and -2.0258 longitude). |
